The sargeant
Opened the meeting by announcing that the eggs were getting cold! As it was a very cold day that wasn't surprising! Fourteen members and four guests sat down for breakfast.
Apologies:
Firstly an especial apology to Max who had told YHC that he was going to be away but his name was omitted from last weeks' list. He'll be back next week .No other apologies have been passed to the bulletin editor.
Visitors:
There were four who'd been invited by two members especially to hear one of the front runner in the Auckland Mayoral race. The 'speakers team' have done a great job in getting important, competent people to address the club. Having friends and relatives come to hear these speakers gives them an introduction to Rotary so they could become potential members.
Club announcements:
Colleen and incoming president David reminded members to pay up for the Presidential Change over function next Wednesday, June 29th at the Parnell starting at 6.30pm. $50 pp to be paid into

giving you name and identifying the payments for the changeover.
Henry reported on progress in establishing the Evening club. It will meet once a month on a Thursday evening at the Mt Eden Bowling club. The club is targeted at the 20 to 25 age group. The first speaker is Sophie Gilmour from Everybody Eats. Her talk will be followed by a formal networking activity, ensuring that all participants can get to know other attendees.
It's RYLA next week - Colin is o/c transport so when you roll over in bed on Saturday morning at 6.30 am think of your dedicated fellow members who are moving RYLA participant around!
The sargeant celebrated 75 years old this week. And he doesn't look a day over....Obviously Wendy has preserved him well!
Three minute Speaker:
Modesty prevents YHC, just, from commenting on the brilliance of the three minute speech which recognised the 50th anniversary of the speaker's arrival in New Zealand. The second best decision he ever made. (The Ever Loving insisted that it was his second best decision!)
The Speaker:
Wayne Brown, Mayoral candidate set out his sales pitch.
He is an experienced business man who has been a leader in of a local authority in the past and has lead a number of successful major turn-around actions in large organisations. In summary his line is that the super city is underperforming for ratepayers and has not delivered on what was promised when it was formed. The payroll has doubled with staff numbers recently increasing by 20% when the city's population has only increased by 10%.
Under the slogan "Fix Auckland!" he would introduce operational efficiencies into the CCOs, initially by firing their boards!
He had some great one liners, "Goff never saw a fence that he didn't want to sit on", when he saw the other candidates, "Shit, I can do better than them", "Light rail is a solution looking for a problem" and puts himself forward as "Somebody who knows what they're doing and has a plan".
There was limited evidence of strategic thinking but a major emphasis of significantly improving the operation efficiencies of the council and its operating entities.
If he can deliver on his promises given the inertia of a powerful bureaucracy he would have done a great job for our city.
