President David opened the meeting at 7.31.
There were 15 members present including Greg just returned from Singapore and the US.
Apologies: Rory, Ted, Phil and Avis
Club announcements;
The speakers were supposed to be a group of youngsters who had recently attended the RYLA programme but confusion prevailed, they'd been cancelled/deferred/were attending tonight's CETA meeting. Nobody was certain. The outcome was there wasn't a speaker.
Phillippa reminded the club of the first CETA meeting. It will take place at 6.30 at the Mt.Eden Bowling Club tonight (Wednesday 31st) . Sophie Gilmore of "Everybody Eats' will be the speaker - all are welcome.
Don C told members that there is a Volunteers' Expo at the Netball Centre, Stonefields, on 17th September between 10am and 2.00 pm If you have spare time and can make a contribution to society many different organisations are looking for a helping hand.
President David reminded us that next meeting will be the first of the month thus a collection day of bath products for the Grace Foundation.
Sargeant's session: David commorated birthdays - the prize goes to Jim (90!) YHC (80) and then Ingrid (one doesn't reveal lady's ages!)
Costco has now opened, David H and Colleen have joined and used it to buy fuel, both highly recommend it - although it's out in the boonies!
During the week the NZ Herald had published letters from both the sargent and the bulletin writer; so both had to make a contribution to the Sunshine Fund.
Three minute speaker:
Peter Barron is a volunteer at Motuihe Island in the Gulf. He related the damage that all the plastic waste does to birds, especially at this time of year when chicks are being fed buy their parents. Unfortunately because of the plastic in the water may of these young birds are starving to death. He and fellow volunteers regularly collect sacks of rubbish on the Auckland facing beach. Today's lesson -don't let plastic get into the beach - or washed out to the Gulf with storm water.
The Speaker:
Greg had been allocated responsibility to introduce the speaker - as there wasn't one he was prevailed to tell us of his trip to the States.
The main object had been to assist his mother to move into an assisted living facility. Greg's parents had been living on their 300 acre farm in Iowa for the last 50 years. Greg and family had to clear the family home for sale.
If ever we needed a reminder to get rid of stuff this was it! Greg will be returning to the States in a couple of weeks to watch the auction of a life time's collection of useful stuff and memorabilia .
The meeting ended early!
Passing comment: YHC walks to Rotary. On his way home he was able to walk faster between the Cathedral and Jubilee Building than that traffic could proceed. Covid's over - traffic is the winner!
