Christopher Luxon will speak to the club on Wednesday 27th April at a dinner at the Parnell. Put this in your diary, think of friends and neighbours you can invite  and be prepared  to sign them up - max capacity 100 (government regs. don't you know).

Three minute speaker:
Rory told us of his early years as a lawyer in Melbourne - and how to set up a small business with the help of a receptionist in a neighbouring office!

 The Speaker:
Julian Paton, the Director of the Centre for Heart Research was ably introduced by Max. Originally from Summerset he's been in the role for just over four years.

One third of the deaths in NZ are from heart disease, so if you want to live forever look after it!

The Centre's work is multi disciplinary as heart disease has many causes. The life expectancy of Polynesians  is seven years less than the life expectancy of other New Zealanders. The centre is working with appropriate health providers to address this.

High blood pressure, that is over 140 / 90, is bad for you - and it increases with age. so, resign yourself to the bland life, don't smoke, drink to excess, eat salt or sugar go out with wild women (YHC added that, Julian didn't) and exercise - and you'll die of boredom with a perfect heart!

New Zealand does not spend as much as many other states on heart research, it's 45th in the world, and naturally the Centre for Heart Research would like that boosted!

There is a lot of interesting research taking place and Julian's  well put together presentation was a fascinating introduction to it.
