President Phill opened the meeting at 7.35 precisely.
As the speaker had to get away early the normal agenda was turned upside down so he spoke first.
Speaker: Ian Letele Ian's the boss, founding father and driving force behind a group of refuge centres. The key thrust of the centres is to restore people to the community. Newcomers frequently have come from prison or violent relationships; most are affected to methamphetamine and many of the men are gang affiliates. Ian and his small team are dedicated to creating, 'A safe place where the residents can reset their lives'. Many of the women have children with them who are enrolled in local schools. On average the residents stay for between six and twelve months but a few have been there much longer.
This was an impressive presentation; it seemed that Ian and his team are doing valuable work.
Club announcements:
Light entertainment: A repeat of last week's request: Don C recommended an Amazon TV programme, Jeremy Clarkson's Farming Stuff, insightful and amusing.
(PS If you have any suggestions for TV based entertainment or other good, mainly legal) lockdown pastimes send them to me so they can be passed n to other members. ) Silence was the firm reply - come on guys, A into G!
Duties: These have been largely ignored by el Presidente so they're only included because YHC is a traditionalist.
Christmas Function: Yes I know it's a wee bit early and we don't know if we'll be allowed to socialise but this is early notice that we will be celebrating the end of the year, Christmas, what ever takes your fancy on Saturday 27th November.
A diary entry now is probably appropriate - these functions are always better if there are hoards of people there!
General discussion:
The speaker was impressive. Many members felt that as the charity is local, required and seemed to be well run we should do what we could to support it. Ted, Barry and others will connect with Ian to ascertain particular needs and report back to the club.
Feedback
On 11th August our esteemed treasurer emailed a circular to all members. He stated that the club's income would be much lower this year as a result of the reconfiguration of the Golf Tournament so he wanted to know what individual members priorities were for our charitable activities / donations. So please go to your spam folder, retrieve Don's note and reply to it.
