Trees for survival planting day last thursday was sucessfully completed in the morning before the weather turned. Members, David Jones,Rory,Colin,Phil and Malcolm attended with St Kents pupils and planted 714 trees with help of 3 electric holeboring augors and2dogs... Good meal of sausages  was enjoyed in the woolshed.

3 Minute speaker,Ted,confirmed he had just turned 80 and would be attending Probus, while still coming to club when possible.Has been with Rotary for35 years and was, with Colin,a founding member of the club and the major driver of the Golf Tournament which raised over $2m in its 20years.Wished the club well and  admired Pres Malcolm's enthusiasm.

Gender neutral Sergant Wendy admitted Nick with 2letters to the editor had just matched her own two.
Her fine session yielded over $220 which intrigued our American visitor who I thnik will introduce it to his home club.

Speaker was PresMalcolm who spoke on his favorite topic,"The Risksof Buying Property" geologicallywise.
We want the highest property with the best views, but usually fail to assess the dangers of slopes and cliff edges. Gravity is a constant for slopes and cliffs recede at at average of 10metres per 100 years (Usually all at once)
He showed examples of topo maps of Muriwai and Opotiki and how the danger signs of fatal land slips are obvious if one looked in the right direction, rather than the nice view.
As to Muriwai there is no financially viable solution but retreat and the present houses should have never been built after the 1965 fatalities and even a report of the danger which was presented in the 1980s.
The last observation was that the proposed govt/council buyout of red stickered homes round the country applied only to flood prone areas, not landslide areas.
